"Website developer" means very different things to different people
In Chhattisgarh's growing digital services market — from Raipur and Bilaspur to Durg-Bhilai and smaller district towns like Dhamtari or Kanker — the term "website developer" covers everyone from a single freelancer reselling a website template to a full team building custom Next.js applications with real technical SEO. The price difference between these options can be 5-10x, and so can the actual business outcome. This guide covers exactly what to check before you hire.
Questions to ask before hiring anyone
1. "Will this be a custom build or a template?"
Template-based sites (including many "custom" WordPress builds that are really a theme with a new logo) are faster and cheaper, but they're harder to make fast, harder to differentiate visually, and often carry unnecessary code that hurts Core Web Vitals. Ask directly whether the quote includes a custom design and custom-coded build, or a themed template with content swapped in.
2. "What does the SEO setup actually include?"
Almost every developer will say "yes, SEO is included." Push further: does that mean unique meta titles and descriptions per page, schema markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ), an actual XML sitemap, canonical URLs, and reasonable Core Web Vitals scores — or does it just mean they installed a plugin and moved on? Ask to see a live example of a site they built and check its metadata and PageSpeed score yourself.
3. "Can I see real websites you've built, not just design mockups?"
A polished Figma mockup tells you nothing about the delivered product's speed, mobile behavior, or code quality. Insist on live URLs of past work, and actually browse them on your phone.
4. "Who owns the code, hosting, and domain after the project?"
Some agencies build on their own infrastructure and effectively hold your website hostage for future changes or migrations. You should own your domain registration, hosting account (or have full access), and the complete source code at project completion.
5. "What's the actual cost breakdown, and what happens after launch?"
A fixed, itemized quote is a good sign. Vague hourly billing with no cap is a common source of budget overruns. Also ask what post-launch support is included by default versus billed separately.
Red flags to watch for
- A quote with no mention of mobile performance, SEO, or Core Web Vitals at all
- No live examples of past work, or examples that are clearly slow when you test them
- Pressure to pay the full amount upfront before any work begins
- Vague answers about who owns the domain, hosting, and code after launch
- No clear process — discovery, design, development, review, launch — just "we'll build it and show you"
Why local market understanding still matters, even with a remote-capable team
A website developer who understands Chhattisgarh's business landscape — the difference between what a Raipur real estate agency needs versus what a Bhilai steel-ancillary supplier needs versus what a Jagdalpur tourism business needs — builds better-targeted content and SEO than a generic, one-size-fits-all agency, even if the actual development work happens remotely. This is exactly why we build dedicated, genuinely unique content for each city and district we serve, rather than one generic template with the city name swapped in.
A realistic cost range (Chhattisgarh market, 2026)
| Project Type | Realistic Range |
|---|---|
| Simple 5-page business website | ₹15,000 – ₹30,000 |
| Custom business website with blog/CMS | ₹30,000 – ₹60,000 |
| Shopify ecommerce store | ₹30,000 – ₹80,000 |
| Custom ecommerce platform | ₹80,000+ (scoped after requirements call) |
| MVP mobile app (React Native) | ₹60,000 – ₹1,50,000 |
Quotes significantly below these ranges usually mean a template with minimal customization and no real SEO work; quotes significantly above usually reflect either a larger agency's overhead or genuinely custom, complex requirements — ask what specifically justifies the difference.
